3:AM TOP 5: DONARI BRAXTON
You may be familiar with musician/writer Tyondai Braxton, but I bet you haven't heard of his brother, Donari Braxton... yet. Believe me: you will, sooner than later. His first collection of short stories -- a masterpiece of literate quirkiness which bears the minimalist title I -- was recently released by Matthew Wascovich's wonderful Slow Toe Publications. It marks the emergence of a singular voice pitched somewhere in between J.L. Borges and H.P. Tinker. Admittedly, some of the stories could have done with a little editing and the book is peppered with pesky typos, but this may be due to the author's ambitious project to publish an "on-going multi-functional anthology" which should run to ten volumes (I through X).
Donari Braxton, who wears his literary influences on his sleeve, has also just completed a translation of Paul Celan's Die Niemandrose, and is preparing a book tour (scheduled for August) to promote I, so keep your eyes peeled if you fancy catching a live rendition of his metafictional take on the picaresque. Here's his double Top 5 -- the last 5 books he's read as well as the 5 tracks he listens to most at the moment:
1. A Life -- Elia Kazan 2. Does Your House Have Lions? -- Sonia Sanchez 3. The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal -- Mikhail Tal 4. Study of Distinct Figures and Shapes -- Irano Dorajan 5. La Part maudite -- Georges Bataille
1. Selected tracks from the forthcoming sequel to History That Has No Effect -- Tyondai Braxton 2. "Petite Suite" -- Claude Debussy 3. "Polish Requiem" -- Penderecki 4. "Mega" -- Anti-Pop Consortium 5. "Were You a Witness (II)" -- Diamanda Galas
