GET BEHIND ME BILLY
Looks like Billy Childish (who features in The Edgier Waters, 3:AM's forthcoming anthology) and Jack White (of the White Stripes) are no longer best of friends. Following the publication of an interview in GQ in which Childish apparently criticised the American band for turning rebellion into money, Jack White retaliated by accusing the British artist of plagiarism. Billy Childish's open letter is well worth quoting:
"Dear Sir,
Though I have undoubtedly angered Jack White, I think it's a bit nasty of him to accuse me of plagiarism merely because his former admiration of my work was not reciprocated. It all smacks of jealousy to me. I have a bigger collection of hats, a better moustache, a more blistering guitar sound and a fully developed sense of humour. The only thing I can't understand is why I'm not rich.
Yours sincerely,
Billy Childish
P.S. I always stay well within the music industry's recommended guidelines of never plagiarising more than 50 per cent of my material. But no matter who my influences may be, I would never stoop so low as to ripping off Led Zeppelin.
P.P.S I hope I have not gone and offended Led Zeppelin now."
London's extraordinary Aquarium Gallery (where two past 3:AM events were held) produced a spoof poster advertising a boxing match between the two artists in order to send up the way in which the media have been baying for blood. It is interesting to note that the aforementioned poster has now been banned by eBay following complaints from the White Stripes. Get the lowdown here.
