    THE MISSING LINKS
I recently received a cool postcard ad from a new American journal of "poetry & poetics" called Plantarchy. Looks very promising indeed. * Tristram Shandy: the trailer. * A short (and incomplete) history of literary hoaxes from Chatterton to JT Leroy who was recently outed by the New York Times. I feel quite smug as I've been telling all and sundry for years that JT Leroy was a fraud. And a girl! A lot of people are looking very silly indeed today. Those, in particular, who believe that being fucked-up and "transgressive" (LOL) is enough to turn you into an interesting writer. Further reading: The Village Voice on the preposterous "cult" of JT ("One of LeRoy's literary mentors, Bruce Benderson, wrote a few years ago: 'Seldom in my life had I encountered a 'professional' with such a knack for creating an instant sense of intimacy'".) For a first-hand account, check out Dennis Cooper's always-interesting (and obviously sincere) blog: "I just hope that the people who've been taken will swallow their pride and begin to entertain the fact that that they were fooled, and that it's okay to have been fooled. No one was more fooled than me, and it blows my mind that I bought the whole story for so many years, but accepting that I was really gullible for what I believed was a good cause is really okay and kind of interesting when I'm not angry at Laura for fucking me over". Oh, and this. Of course. * In a similar vein: the James Frey controversy. * The Arctic Monkeys rock Kitty Empire's world: "That funny feeling you get when it all ends is, after all, the planet shifting a little". * Welcome to The Midnight Bell. Love the font and the humour. * New Yeah Yeah Yeahs website (ahead of the album). * Short Term Memory Loss on Stunning Lofts, Tom Gidley's excellent first novel. * One of Buzzwords' favourites, HP Tinker, is showcased over at Laura Hird's. * On the subject of Mr Tinker, here's an article about the disappearance of the literary initial. * We've already linked to them before, but we really like the 20 Jazz Funk Greats blog. * The Independent's Foreign Fiction Prize longlist. * Ulysses tops poll of most valuable books. * The mystery of the town that was painted red. * James Flint on Rick Moody's The Diviners "which reads for the most part like a prose writer's revenge on the US entertainment industry". * Hermann Schwartz of the recently-reformed Metal Urbain (France's answer to the Sex Pistols) is posting his 1978 diary on the Net. * Channel 4 launch Four Docs. * Carol Ann Duffy pockets the TS Eliot poetry prize. * Outrageous firsts in TV history. * Lost bands of the new wave era. * The annual Edgar Poe graveside tribute mystery. * A Beat Museum recently opened in San Francisco. I hope to visit it on my SF trip in April. If any local 3:AM readers want to show me and the missus around that would be really cool...
